CHAPTER EIGHT

“So she’s being bullied in school and I offered to buy her clothes at Duncan’s Department store, no less.”

“Eeeks,” Susie said, “couldn’t you have said Savemart or somewhere else that’s cheap at least? Everyone knows only rich folks shop at Duncan’s. I can’t even afford to buy socks in that store!”

“I know, I know. It just slipped off my tongue.”

“So, what did Zeke say when you offered?” Susie asked.

“He said I was a kind and caring person.”

“Well, there you go,” Susie said, “it was nice of you to offer.”

“He said it because he thought it was generous of me—especially considering I am supposed to be flat broke.”

“Rich or poor—it was generous of you to offer to buy clothes for his niece,” Susie said firmly.

“I guess…it just feels wrong to mislead him. I really feel like I need to tell Zeke the truth.”

“You like him a lot, huh?” Anne chimed in as she sprayed cleaner on the glass of one of the jewelry display cases.

“More than a lot,” I admitted.

Anne looked up at me curiously. “Why, Janet Sayer…you’re in love with him, aren’t you?”

I nodded. “I can’t stop thinking about him.” I’d fallen hard and fast for the burly apartment manager. I spent my days and nights thinking about him. I wanted to feel his lips on mine and his body pressed tightly against me. I wanted to eat with him, laugh with him, sleep with him…do everything with him…I had to admit it. I was crazy about the big tiger shifter.

Susie grinned. “Aww, that’s so sweet. See, I knew this lifestyle trade would work out!”

I made a face. “I just don’t know what I’m going to do. He told me he can’t stand phonies and liars and…I guess that’s exactly what I am.”

“No you are not!” Susie stated firmly.

“Look,” I admitted, “this has made me realize how much time I’ve spent wondering about what people are wearing, how they look, and how much money they make.”

Susie and Anne exchanged glances and I could see written clearly on their faces that I was right.

“I was that bad, huh,” I commented softly.

Anne grimaced. “We love you, Janet. But yeah, you could get wrapped up in your things at times.”

I hung my head. I felt so ashamed of myself. I’d been placing so much value on what I and other people had instead of who they were.

“I feel terrible...here I am lying to Zeke about my true lifestyle,” I muttered.

“So? How bad would it be to find out someone is really rich?” Anne asked.

I shook my head. “You don’t know Zeke. Money is not important to him. So long as he has a roof over his head, food in his belly, and his family around him, he’s happy. It’s not about me having money…it’s about me pretending to be someone I’m not. I’ve been lying to him.”

“Ok,” Susie said dubiously. “All I know is that if I thought the man I loved was flat broke and then I found out he was
